The Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad have many events each year – like our Open House, Annual Halloween Town & Spooky Train, and more! See below for events coming up – we look foreword to seeing you!

Historical Presentation – The Great Wood Famine

Join us at the Tanana Valley Railroad Museum for an enlightening look at the first twenty years of our Golden Heart City, when it ran on an economy based on wood consumption, that brought Fairbanks to the very brink of extinction. We will look at how the wood economy worked, and the national & international influences that stymied commerce and economic growth in the Fairbanks Mining District during those early years. Joan will cover the types of wood consumption, daily and annual usage rates, extent of cutting, distribution, usages, and other energy options available at the time. This historical presentation will reflect how we are still struggling with some of these same issues, and illustrate how the lessons of the past can directly correlate with the present and future. Saturday, October 26, from 12 – 7pm at Pioneer Park

Historical Presentation – Keystone Canyon, the Great Shoot Out

Join us at the Tanana Valley Railroad Museum on Wednesday, February 12 at 6pm for a wonderful lecture on the captivating history of the Valdez Railroad, full of action, adventure, suspense, mystery, and seeing the struggle between the big guy and the little guy.

This free presentation has been compiled and presented by Joan Skilbred, a local historian well known for her amazing in-depth work to search out the truth of our states amazing history. Joan has been working with local history for nearly 20 years, during which has made great discoveries and shared her work with her community. This presentation is the work of nearly six months of research and gathering information. Joan was happy to debut her presentation for the 2019 Pioneers Convention in Valdez and hopes that you can make it to her presentation here in Fairbanks.
